Goth in progress

Book One: Theatrical. Okay, let's be frank, it's all a bit weird, but we're capable of hidden surprises; likes dressing up on Mondays, enjoying a bit of sticking and gluing and a bit of attention, on the whole let's not take life too seriously. Hey, is there's a good-vibe event to attend? Let's grab the bag and go!

Book Two: Organised. Well, likes to pretend organisation in a sort of don't-mess-with-my-desk way, but when you get into the thing, probably doesn't care too much between deadlines so long as stuff gets done, which it will do, eventually. Look, just stop asking, okay? I have a big diary. So of course I'll get round to it. Now shut up. I have a list to make.

Book Three. Romantic. Might need to take a few moments out to lie supine in the garden amidst the bees and flowers, smell the air, watch a beetle, sigh, remember that poem? The one which has a poison flower in it, probably shouldn't eat the flowers. Stop calling me Dippy. Sigh.

Ragged edges

Here's a book that holds much of the Knicker Drawer Philosophy. (Yes, a Knicker Drawer Philosophy! There is indeed such a thing!)

I can't make a tidy book, nor cut to an even edge, nor stitch in a straight line. Such things are not possible, because a Knicker Drawer book comes from living and, in my way of being, living isn't made of neat edges and straight lines.

Living, experience - the daily raggedness of hours, questions unanswered, moments unresolved - is all about unevenness, uneasiness, uncertainty.

I celebrate that - living amongst my ambiguous, boundary-shifting, undefined and fluid moments. The broken story is always more memorable to me than the happy ending. The fragments more interesting than the whole. I leave my threads hanging, papers torn and edges curved.

But I recognise how a person might want a completion - even if simply to rest from the energies required to keep hold of continuous changing fragments - and maybe there is a little bit inviting that in each Knicker Drawer book, too. Clean pages, edges sliced neatly in order. The binding, straight amongst the hanging threads. Then this, I leave to you - add your definition of a moment in my raggedness of time. I think of this junction - me with my thread fragments and you with your pencil point - as our moment of collaborative art. Then see what can come from our happy coincidence.

Sunday

One for the future

Add charms to the chain as you find them...

pin, stitch and glue items of lace, snatches of fabric, pictures and photos to cloth and paper...

add ribbons, threads and twine....

tuck away feathers, petals and found objects gathered along the way...

doodle, draw, note, design, plan, make lists, capture memories, hold papers: whatever you need in your note book, it's waiting for you, always.

Saturday

Story book for Silk town

A story book that combines fragilities with strengths; history and heritage seeping into the future; delicacy and sturdy usage, hopefully for years to come.

Paper both recycled and pressed new; folded and turned to create pockets and tucks; tones of ivory, white, caramels.

Leather cover overlaid with suede to invite your caress. The more you use it, the more beautiful this book will become.

(Also: Book must contain bees. Try not to let them escape.)

Wednesday

Bundle the Unexpected

Objects: Conker, Teddy, Ring, Book. All in a sock.

Book and pocket, straps to enclose with a buckle. The most unlikely and unexpected objects combined. Papers clean and mixed, aged and new, keep together your most secret plans. I dunno, could be magical happenings brought about through dressing up and telling stories. (Sounds like a perfect way to spend an afternoon.)
